Detailed Ratings Ease of Installation & Setup: The software is a breeze to install and operate. It comes on two disks, one of which being an installation disk and the other is the program disk, and is both MAC and PC compatible. It would have been nice to get the software on one disk, but it is simple enough to get started. Installation walks the user through the process with an easy to manage auto run menu.Features: Rosetta Stone Spanish is a learning system that uses pictures, text, audio, and voice recognition software to help the user learn the Spanish language. Lessons are set up in a way that uses both pictures and text to teach the user. Four pictures are shown to the user, Spanish vocabulary word or phrase that matches the picture is shown, and then the word is spoken, by the narrator, with the correct pronunciation. Another method of learning that is available is to have a word spoken, and the user must choose the correct picture that matches the term. No matter what method of learning the user prefers, Rosetta Spanish can accommodate it. Speaking, hearing, reading, and writing are all addressed in this software package. The writing program in the software is an excellent way to learn to write Spanish correctly. If an error is made in the spelling or usage of the word, the error is highlighted. This error detection system is a wonderful way to help to learn the correct way to write in Spanish. It is accurate even to the point of highlighting single letters that are misspelled. Speech recognition software is another effective way that Rosetta Stone Spanish Spanish can teach Spanish. A word or phrase is spoken in Spanish and, with the help of a headset or microphone, the user repeats the word or phrase. Users are then judged on how well they pronounced the terms. It is a very helpful tool that is provided, even though a headset is not included. Ease of Use: Rosetta Stone Spanish is incredibly easy to navigate. Even though there are many options to choose from, they are laid out in a very simple to read and follow layout. Every option can be found and operated with little trouble. Also, there is a help feature on every page if you get lost. There is also a preview section that gives a list of goals that will be covered in each lesson. Content Quality: There are a few different methods of learning Spanish with this software. Delay mode allows the user to see or hear a word, and after a short pause shows different pictures that must be matched to the term. Timer mode asks timed questions users and keeps track of the time it took the user to answer. Test mode tracks how many questions were correct and incorrect, how much progress you have made with the lessons, and what you scored on each lesson. Most of the lessons focus primarily on vocabulary and pronunciation. Very little is taught about tenses, conversations, or usages of the vocabulary. The theory behind lessons is that you will learn by surrounding yourself with Spanish with no English. Everything is spoken and written in Spanish, which forces users to adapt by picking up the basics on the fly. The speech recognition is a great way to learn vocabulary, pronunciation, and reading Spanish. Rosetta Stone Spanish Spanish does not come with a headset or microphone, though, and a good one is recommended. Lower quality headsets can really hinder the effectiveness of this tool. The Good: Rosetta Stone Spanish works by completely immersing the user in the Spanish Language. By only using Spanish, the user will pick up on things whether they know it or not. Also, the writing program is very helpful and can be customized to be as lenient or as strict as the user needs. It also does a great job of showing the user what mistakes were made by highlighting, words, phrases, or even individual letters that were incorrect. All of the lessons are very well done and can be very effective in teaching a foreign language. Quality of Rosetta Stone Spanish Spanish is quite good and will be a great tool for learning a new language. The Bad: Some parts of the language, such as differences in tenses (past, present and future) are not really discussed in detail. These are very important in Spanish, yet are left out for the majority of this software. Lack of a headset is a bit of a letdown, but is easily overcome. The Bottom Line: Overall, Rosetta Stone Spanish Spanish is a great tool to learning a new language. Between the lessons, the writing program, and the speech recognition tool, Spanish cannot get much easier to learn. By immersing the user in the language, the basics will be learned without the user even realizing that they are learning. Although, there were some negative aspects, such as lack of depth to some parts of language such as tenses, this is still one of the best products on the market for learning a new language. The size of Rosetta Stone Spanish Spanish makes the $195.00 cost worth the purchase.
