The Good: Rosetta Stone French is an excellent program that can aid in learning the French language. It uses pictures, text, and audio to teach the skills necessary to learn French. Also, the speech recognition software that comes with the program is a great way to practice pronunciation and listening comprehension. The lessons themselves use pictures and word association to teach. If you are a visual learner, then this is something that will help immensely in learning French. Navigation of the material is easy and each page comes with its own help button.

Users can hear or read the word that matches the picture before they choose the correct answer. This customization is wonderful for different learning styles. A writing program comes with the lessons and is a great way to learn the correct accents, writing style, and conjugations that are used. It also highlights mistakes from whole words, incorrect accents, or even individual letters. Users can define how strict the program will be when grading the writing, which is a great feature for advanced users.

The Bad: Speech recognition is troublesome if the words are not spoken exactly as is spoken by the narrator. This can be a problem for words that have hard to discern accents and almost silent letters. Rosetta Stone French focuses almost primarily on vocabulary and does not get into enough depth on word conversions for different situations.

The Bottom Line: Overall, Rosetta Stone French is a great software package that uses word and picture association along with hearing pronunciation to teach French. Lessons are easy to understand and navigate and by combining different teaching methods, lessons are enjoyable and stay fresh. The Speech Recognition software could be more accurate, but overall is quite helpful. Rosetta Stone is a great product for any beginner to intermediate level French student.
