The Good: Piano is Fun is a decent resource to get you playing piano. It is easy to use. You can either listen to the narrated lessons online or download them onto your computer. Since Fernando is a professional software developer, the game is top-notch and would be fun for any youngster having to learn clefs. The game is easy to follow and a music teacher can use the game as an educational supplement. The product is geared for young learners with an adult overseeing and keeping track of their progress. The price is also very reasonable.

The Bad: The software is not for adults, despite the claims. It is not Mac compatible, which will automatically turn away many people. The registration process is a bit of a hassle. I was disappointed to see that there are no e-books, learning aids, videos, audio, or anything else. The higher levels on the game go fast, showing that students have to learn the earlier lessons very well.

The Bottom Line: Although Piano is Fun will not teach anyone how to become a complete piano player, it will teach you clefs and notes. Other websites are better for adults who want to learn to play the piano via chord progression. But, for music teachers or parents who want to give their kids a fun, yet challenging learning game, this is a good one to utilize. If there were more materials, it might be worth it for adults. The site needs to change its target market to music teachers or parents looking for software for their children.

[DESCRIPTION FROM MANUFACTURERS WEB SITE]

Because four years ago I was in exactly the same position as you are right now. You see, my nephew Michael (who was 8 at the time) was struggling to learn to read music and I desparately wanted to help him.

As a professional software developer and a musician with over twenty years of experience I knew what I was looking for.

Looking For An Answer…

I started out by searching for note learning software but the only programs I found were monotonous drills, You know the ones -- where a note appears and you just click on its name. I knew my nephew would find these games dull and boring.

What I was really wanted was a program that would:

  • Introduce the notes gradually
  • Teach both the note names and where to find the notes on the piano keyboard
  • Clearly explain the difference between the Treble and Bass clef notes
  • Allow me to select which notes to practice
  • Use bright and colorful animation
  • Be so much fun that my nephew would keep coming back for more

After a lot of research, I realized that the program I was looking for just didn't exist, so I decided to create it myself. Five months later... Piano Is Fun was born!
