Detailed Ratings Ease of Installation & Setup: The site had some trouble allowing us access after we purchased the material. We had to contact customer support for them to send us the e-book as an attachment. The main e-book is nearly 6 megabytes, which is rather large and will not be accepted by many e-mail programs. The support staff, however, did respond quickly. The ease of installation is easy as there is really no software to install. If the e-book download process works, then saving the e-book .pdf files are easy and opening them only requires Adobe Reader, which is a free download from the Adobe website. Features: UnlocktheGuitar comes with a total of three e-books and a members-only access page called Beginner Chord Sound Files that allows the user to listen online to various chords discussed in the e-books. The main e-book, entitled The Beginners Guide to Unlocking the Guitar: Learn how to easily play the guitar in just one weekend! is a well-organized and detailed manual. The first lessons are devoted to describing to you step by step how you can go about purchasing the right equipment to begin your lessons. The book also outlines how to sit, hold, and properly tune the instrument. The e-book outlines how you could go through the entire lesson structure in one weekend but recommends you choose your own schedule. The e-book continues its lessons offering insightful information on learning good guitar-playing habits how to develop good finger muscle response and reaction, along with lengthy lessons on how to properly situate yourself and your guitar to get the most out of each session. Then, the e-book touches on the types and differences of chords. This is offered as an overview and not a guide to playing, which is actually featured in the other e-book, The Perfect Chord Chart for Beginners. While the main e-book does not give you any songs to play, per se, it does help the user figure out how to choose which music to play. Additionally, this is where the third e-book, 150 Popular Songs with 4 Chords or Less, comes in handy. The main lessons offer more secrets to teaching you to play the guitar. The guide is quite slow at getting to many further points as it recaps, repeats, and reteaches aspects that were discussed in earlier sessions. Some power chords and the matrix mode of playing are discussed. The e-book is filled with detailed photos as well. Just when you think you might learn more, the e-book offers its bonus section called Beginning Singing Techniques. The e-book should delve more into the guitar since that is what users want to learn. For being a great guide for the very beginner, offering decent sound files online for the 150 easy songs, but for being a bit long-winded in certain aspects, the features section of UnlocktheGuitar gets 3.5 out of 5 Stars. Ease of Use: The ease of use of the site is straightforward. However, upon purchasing the program from UnlocktheGuitar, we had some trouble accessing the membership area (see Ease of Installation below). The Beginner Chord Sound Files page is easy to access, organized, and works well, outlining each chord and allowing users to instantly hear what each chord should sound like. The e-books are easy to use and require no in-depth computer knowledge to download. For being straightforward and basic, UnlocktheGuitar receives a 4.0 out of 5 stars for its ease of use. Content Quality: The content quality of Unlocktheguitar barely receives the 3.5 stars that it earned. And, the only reason it does is because of the well-done photos and the sound files that are accessible online. The biggest turnoff of the whole program is that the narrator of the e-books constantly recaps and regurgitates information. While that is not bad, per se, it is done to such a point that it becomes annoying. While Unlocktheguitar rates high for its incessant nagging about how to hold the guitar, it does not actually explain how to play it. The Good: The quality of the main e-book along with the bonus mini e-books and the online sound files are good. The photographs are easy to see and well done. The Bad: The program does not offer any video or in-depth audio lessons. While the whole program is good for the beginner, it does not go into detail about actually playing the guitar or teaching chords more than mentioning proper techniques and differences in chords. The Bottom Line: The e-books are well done, organized, and easy to navigate. The author goes into great detail to offer the beginning guitarist a guide on choosing, buying, tuning, holding the guitar, and positioning your hands and playing fingers. Beyond that, the guide is full of reminders about how you need to relax, take breaks, and train your finger muscles and memory. One lesson does talk about the differences between chords, but as far as teaching the chords, you will have to use the mini e-book The Perfect Chord Chart for Beginners to get a quick, not-so-in-depth overview of simple chords for the beginning guitarist.

This site offers some good materials too. With a few different e-books that will keep you busy, it teaches mainly using chords. The explanations of the guitar and relaxation techniques is well done and perhaps, partially overdone.
