Sam Ash Music Institute has so much potential. It is setup great and offers the users everything in the perfect form. There was not as much emphasis on teaching the basics to music and teaching the popular songs instead.

Detailed Ratings

The Good Sam Ash Music Institute is setup very nicely. Almost every lesson includes video, text and diagrams. It is very simple to understand what they are trying to get across to you and pick up on the lessons very quickly. There are many options available to make it more interactive for the users. You are able to chat with an administrator, chat with the community, post on the forum, or check out the administrator blog.

They cover many styles of play including rock, acoustic, jazz, blues, and folk. This is very good for someone that wants to be a well rounded guitarist and be able to play any style they feel like or upon someone's request. There are also sections dedicated to helping you be a better lead guitarist and rhythm guitarist.
The Bad The videos were taking a while to load up, even on a fast connection. I felt almost like there was a lack of lessons. There was a lot of time spent on making the lessons they DO have very good, but there still was not as much as I would liked to have seen. The forum was a little slow, posting was not a very frequent activity apparently. I felt like there was too much emphasis on learning to how to play popular songs. Most people probably do want to play guitar because of a song they heard and want to be able to play it, but if they truly want to teach, they should teach people to the point where they figure out their favorite songs on their own.
The Bottom Line While it was still a very good product and will teach you how to play guitar, it does not offer the advanced materials needed to make you a great guitarist. There is much time spent on teaching people to play the cool songs found on the radio; while this may be fun, it is not helping people learn as much as teaching them the theory and everything behind these songs. This is not the best system for someone that wants to learn to play guitar not just the cool songs.
